A lot of Australian Beauty Bloggers have subscribed to GlossyBox and other beauty box services, with mixed reviews. GlossyBox got in contact with me about trialling one of their boxes, and I have to say that I was intrigued. I have not signed up to any subscription services, as I feel I would rather spend my money on full sized products that I have researched, or research a product and ask for a specific sample from a pharmacy/department store (for example). Purely because that way you end up with less stuff hanging around your house.
I can however see both sides of the coin. The beauty box subscriptions are wonderful for trying new products that you otherwise may not have thought to try, they provide you with a wider range of brands and you get a parcel in the mail once a month. I am an online shopping addict
with my favourite part being the receiving of the parcels in the mail, so this is the point that appeals to me the most.
So, what did I think of the GlossyBox? Well, I have to admit that it was incredibly fun receiving a gorgeously packaged box in the mail. The outer box and the inner box were too cute for words, and I wasn't expecting them to be so pretty (even though I have heard other bloggers mention that they use them for storage. You would have though that would have given me an inkling...).
The products inside... well for my tastes it was mostly hits, with only a couple of misses. The when you open the box and get past the lovely little welcoming card the first thing you find is a couple of vouchers. To be honest I barely skim read these, I never use vouchers. Instead I just tore straight through to the beauty products.
The selection of products inside was good. I received an Avene Thermal Spring Water, I love this stuff so I was excited to play with it. It's great for my senstive skin. A Proactive Cleansing Bar? I have skin so sensitive I basically have to bathe it in cream, so this is going to become a body soap for me (or it may get passed on to the boy). I am super pleased that I got a sample of KMS Free Shape, which is a heat activated shaping spray. After recently cutting my hair I need to heat style it a lot more and my current thermal protectant is almost empty, so KMS will be used a lot. I am also extremely pleased with the sample of the Dr. Hauschka Cleansing Cream, I have heard wonderful things about this brand and have never had the balls to shell out the money for it. Dr. Hauschka is going straight in the shower. I received a sample of a Nougat hand cream in a goody bag once (possible in my ABBW bags) and I liked it, so this one will be used up as well. So I have a use for everything, therefore GlossyBox has been pretty successful in my eyes.
Until you get to the power bracelet. I laughed when I saw this. A better example of the placebo effect mixed with marketing has probably never been shown. Although, it does cost around $30.0, so that is double the cost of the box right there.
All in all, I very much liked my GlossyBox, and if you are subscription box inclined I would definitely recommend it. Upon subscription you fill out your beauty profile, which allows GlossyBox to best match their months product selection to you. You can see that it works, my box was pretty well suited to me (minus the Proactive, although I do get pretty bad acne, so that is probably where that one came from, not their fault really). Subscribers are also rewarded with GlossyDots, which add up to the cost of a box and are awarded for example, for recruiting a friend.
Plus, it is only $14.95 a month, and for an online shopping addict, that is really a small price to pay for the thrill of a "You've Got Mail" card in the letter box.
