The Eyebrow Disaster

I have had a bit of a battle with my eyebrows. Since last January I have been growing them out, because for some stupid reason every single beautician thinks that I should have thin eyebrows. I have no idea why, but they do. I go to one to try them out, they make them way too thin, and then I have to grow them out. This process has been going on for years, but at the beginning of last year I decided that I would grow them out in earnest, and not let any one touch them who didn't have a good report, after my threading disaster. My eyebrows are very very slow to grow, I usually only need to get them done every 8 to 12 weeks because they grow so slowly. They are also extremely fair. Which makes every little hair precious. Which means that you get quite upset when they are ruined.

I have been undergoing brow rehab and absolutely loving it, until today. This morning, I went to get my eyebrows done, and they were made extremely thin again. At a place I had tried a few times, which had made them look wonderful. In all honesty, I am incredibly pissed off. It took me a year to grow them out, they were still sparse in places, and now they are crazy thin. AGAIN. Why Beauticians? WHY DO YOU NOT LISTEN TO WHAT YOUR CLIENTS WANT? WHY DO YOU STILL THINK THIN EYEBROWS ARE NICE? THEY ARE DISGUSTING!

Actually, I should qualify this. One is crazy thin, and short (the beloved tail of the eyebrow that has taken me MONTHS to grow is now gone. Goneskies. Never to be seen again probably, considering that it took so long to grow). The other is not, because I told the girl after she had done the first one WAY TOO THIN that it was way too thin and not to make the other look like that. The response I got to that was "you want to walk around with uneven eyebrows?", to which I replied "Yes". Yes I do. I can draw one back on until it grows out (if it ever does) but take away both of my eyebrows and I will fork you in the eye (a punishment reserved only for my most hated enemies).I am still a little pissed that she said that actually. After explaining why she had done what she had done (I don't care, you don't know my eyebrows from a bar of soap and taking that much off WILL NOT make hairs grow in a certain spot) and saying that to me, I wanted to up and leave. But I didn't. At least I have one reasonably ok eyebrow I guess.

I still feel like crying when I look in the mirror. Call me vain and superficial, smite me for being so vain and not thinking about more wordly things, but seriously, when someone has worked on their eyebrows for this long, I think they have a reason to be upset when in the space of 15 minutes they are completely screwed. Yes, I know that they will probably grow back. I don't care, this is my rant and I want to have it.

This was my eyebrows this morning before they got butchered. I was happy with the thickness, I just needed a tidy. There will be no after shot, because it makes me super sad. In other news, Face of Australia's Forbidden Fruit lippie is a gorgeous colour, don't you agree?

One day someone will let me have Zoe Foster's Eyebrows!! (source: Primped.com.au)

  1. Oh no you poor thing! I always go to Pure Indulgence, it costs a bit more but I'm always pleased with the result. Where did you get your eyebrows done? I will make sure to avoid it!

  2. I have always done my own eyebrows, it takes time and work and they've always been thicker and I absolutely love them. (Never doing your own eyebrows is one of the only things in "Amazing Face" that I disagree with, even though Zoe's are beautiful.)
I hope your's grow back because your natural brow shape is so nice :)

  3. Oh no- I hate brow disasters , I get woeful upset too...I saw on twitter where you went and I recently ranted about the service there going downhill and heaps of people chimed in and agreed. It was great when I first starting going and they would almost leave too much I would think but then over the coming days i'd realise they were right and would enjoy the fullness.

It seems staff turnover there is quite high now and they dont get the same training they used to. The last experience I had was awful and she did go a tad too thin, never disinfected, filled in anything , powdered me up or consult with me on what I wanted plus she had skanky long chipped acrylics and kept rubbing them all over my waxed face- was grossed out.
You were dead right keeping the second one , filling in one wont seem as soul destroying as two.... maybe try some Kelp or Biotin or some other hair growing type supplement to see if it will hurry things along for you??

PS I also read those eyelash growth stimulators work just as good on brows, maybe worth having a look at??

  4. Me My Best and I - there are two ladies at the place I went to who are great, if I go back it will be to see them, not to see the one who stuffed mine up. I won't risk it again! I am sorry that you have had the same sort of experience, but I have heard a lot recently about the service going downhill, how disappointing considering they are normally so fantastic!

Zoe - I am a bit hopeless with my own eyebrows, although apparently so is everyone so maybe I shall have to start doing them myself again!

kirsten - I don't want to name and shame on my blog (I already massively regret being so abrupt on twitter this morning) but if you DM or email me i will let you know. Which pure indulgence do you go to?

  5. I feel your pain. I had my eyebrows screwed up right royally last time I let someone near them. I hadn't treated myself to anything for so long and for some reason that made it twice as bad. Someone screws up a daily thing, you get annoyed and move on. When its meant to be a special once a year splurge, I'm out for blood.
I have completely uneven eyebrows. One is rounded and lower, the other arched and sits about 1cm higher (must have been my constant look of sarcasm as a teenager) and getting them to look like they belong together is a nightmare. She just waxed willy nilly.  I know eyebrows aren't meant to look like twins, just sisters, but seriously, this cow made sure they didn't even look like the same species.
So I grew them out. Let the wild things grow. I hate this stage of repairs. And then grabbed a set of eyebrow stencils off ebay, a nasty cheap eyeliner and got to work. Chose an outline, traced the shape, looked in the mirror and realised the placement emphasised the difference, scrubbed off one eye (why you not last so well on my waterline nasty eyeliner?) and then went at it again and again till I was happy with the look. Then got to plucking. One laborious, boring, painful hour later my eyebrows are done! Ta Da! And they look like sisters.
Now all I have to do is pluck the strays every few days and I'll be fine.
I have never been happy with anyone waxing my brows and I wish the beauty alert fairy would slap me every time I think its a good idea to go get them done.

I wish you well in your regrowth stage.

  6. Tangled Rose - thank you so much. I am so sorry that you have had to go through all of that, although I commend you for having the balls to do something about it yourself! I am so pleased that you were able to do that and now you have sister eyebrows, that is fantastic!! It is awful when someone one waxing willy nilly, and you can feel it going in the wrong spot but you don't want to say anything. Well, that was my experience anyways.

I seriously commend you, well done on having the talent and the patience to sit there and make your eyebrows perfect!!

  7. I feel your pain - I had a VERY similar experience recently... the day before #ABBW11 actually. Are you keen to name and shame? I'd love to know where to avoid...

  8. I don't want to name and shame on my blog, but if you DM me on twitter or email me I will happily let you know. I just feel bad about publicly ranting on twitter this morning!!

  9. Oh no! I know how you feel... I have cried a couple of times about my eyebrows too. Seems to be a few people out there who don't listen to their customers.
December 2012 I had a beautician rip skin off with my eyebrow hairs and I had a huge scab and then a red mark that lasted for ages. I was devestated.
Happy with my girl at Benefit Chatswood, she's really good.

  10. oh my gosh!! that is awful!! it makes me sound like I should not be wingeing!!  I am however really glad that you found someone who is really good, hang on to her!! xxx

  11. Talent and patience be damned. Nature and gravity have given and taken away so much lately. My sculptured jaw was replaced with hooded eyelids, my formerly acceptably plush figure with a wider load and "where the hell did they come from" bustline. The one thing I can control is my eyebrows and I wield a mighty pair of tweezers.

  12. I like my eyebrows thin-ish (I don't like thick, heavy eyebrows, is what I mean), but not pencil-thin. They're sparse as it is and it's really, really hard to grow them back in after years of overplucking in the 90s. In fact, generally they DON'T grow back in, they just sprout random hairs in weird places. Every time I've tried to grow them to decent level - not too thick, not too thin, I go to a beautician to get them shaped and they wax them back into oblivion.

In short, I HEAR YOU SISTER.

  13. No after shot? No, No No! You must share so we can let you know that they are not really that bad.... Or perhaps gasp and recoil in horror!

  14. Oh noes :( I don't get my eyebrows waxed anymore, because while I do love how clean they look underneath and above the brow, beauticians always give me the weirdest shape. Like it's flat-ish on top, but then they do a curved arch so it just looks friggin weird.

One day I'm going to buy eyelash growth serum to use on the tails of my brows, since they never fully recovered from my self-induced eyebrow disasters when I was 13. Maybe you could try that? :(

  15. I'll smite the bitch down myself. How rude and cruel of her to make you feel so awful! You should go back and let them know so they won't do this to anyone else. BIG HUGS! It'll be ok, I promise!!

  16. Oh dear Oh dear!!!!! Now I only let 1 lady touch my eyebrows, to be honest and I think once you find someone who knows your eyebrows the way you like it, stick with her. :(

I also don't like thin-thin eyebrows either but not overly bushy or thick, just like them neat and elongated with a bit of an arch.

Have you told them how unhappy you are with the result? They really should hear this.

I'm dm-ing u on twitter soon, *squint eyes* cause I wanna know who who who!!

  17. WHY DO THEY DO THAT????? WHY???? you say that you like them a certain way, I basically dictated exactly the amount to take off, and she screwed it up anyways!! I am actually so pissed off still, because like you it takes a very long time to grow them back!

Do you just let them be now? I am thinking that I might just leave them, and not get them done anymore, because apparently beauticians do not know the meaning of the word "thick".

    ReplyDelete
  18. Why oh WHY would anyone, let alone beauticians would think thin brows are okay??? They're awful and we don't live in the 90s!  You poor thing... hope your brow recovers soon *hugs*

Looking at your before pic - your brows look like they have naturally good shapes.  So perhaps you can just take care of them yourself? Just tweeze off the stray hairs underneath and they should look pretty good.  Being a type A control freak, I don't let anyone near my face.

  20. I think I might try a growth serum if I can find one around, but I think I am going to let them be for a while, and let no one near them with a ten foot pole. Then I am thinking I might try the brow bar at Paddington or New Farm, because they are crazy expensive and I have heard that they are quite good.

Why are beauticians so out of touch with the eyebrow trends?

  21. Awww thanks!! I put in a complaint to the company, but I am still so annoyed. i am also so annoyed that I PAID!! She made me feel so shit, and my brows look retarted, and I still paid. I am a fool.

  22. Yeh, I am definitely going to stick with one person, if I ever get them done again. I really like the two ladies you and Yolly do, so If I ever go back it will be to them. I put in a complaint to the company via twitter, so I hope they do something about her, she is the same woman who stuffed up Yolly's and made her bleed!

  23. I think that is what I am going to do, because this is such a mess! I thought I had found a place that did them well, but all it takes is one bad egg I guess!!

Your brows look so lovely too, I think I might have to be like you and only do them myself!!

  24. *hugs* this is why I let no one touch my brows, I love thick brows and if they're getting too wild I pluck them conservatively myself, hope yours recover quick smart!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I just pluck them myself now with my trusty Tweezermans. I need a bigger magnifying mirror though - I can feel the teeny tiny hairs that are there but I can't see them to pluck them. I can't let them be for too long - they get too messy. It looks like a centipede stepped on a landmine.

I think it's a conspiracy. When I was in my 20s I used to say to them "Don't give me those hook (tadpoles) eyebrows", and lo and behold, every time they'd give  me tadpoles. Maybe eyebrow waxers just hate people and this is their revenge.

  26. Thanks so much for sharing this. I'm definitely going to have to do some research before I let anyone touch my brows. I really enjoyed reading this so you have one brand new follower over here :-) can't wait to read more of your stuff

  27. Oh thank you very much Billi, what a wonderful compliment! Definitely send the call out on twitter and read reviews before you decide to go to a place, just to safe instead of sorry. xxx
